Date of death: August 20, 2025
After a long and rewarding life Emmy Singer passed away at the age of 98 in the early morning of August 20, 2025. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Bronislaw Singer, her sister Ily and brother Harry.
Emmy was born on April 14, 1927 in The Hague, Holland, the daughter of Joseph and Katerina Korodi. When the Nazis occupied Holland, she, her sister, brother and father were asked to assemble at the train station to be taken to a concentration camp but at the last moment were told to take another train. The Hungarian government, allied to the axis powers, had demanded that all Hungarian Jewish citizens—and her father, being born in Hungary, and his children, were considered Hungarian citizens—be allowed to take a train to Budapest. This would be the first of a series of lucky escapes that allowed her to survive. After the war, on a boat in the Mediterranean going to Israel, she met her future husband. It was a whirlwind romance, and they would be married shortly after. After several years in the United Kingdom, the two of them with their first child moved to Canada in 1954. For the rest of her life Hamilton would be her home. She was very active in her community, and displayed considerable artistic talents as a sculptress, first in clay and then in marble. Those who knew her will have been struck by her vivaciousness, glamour, athleticism, forthrightness, tenacity and love of dancing.
She will be greatly missed by her sons Brian, Danny, Alex and their spouses, Connie, Sandra and Jodi, and by all her grandchildren, Ben, Nathan, Jacob, Zachary, Hannah, Kayleen and Isla, their partners Shiri, Anna, Angelica and Sean, and her great grandchildren, Joseph, Milo, Ayana and Solomon.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday August 24, 2025, 11:00 am at UHMC, 28 Ewen Road, Hamilton. Shiva will be held on Sunday and Monday evenings at 1770 Main Street West, Apartment 701. Minyan services will be held at 7:30.
Donations can be made to Hamilton Health Services, Hamilton Jewish Family Services or Temple Anshe Sholom.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Emmy’s passing. She was a dear friend to my parents. When I was young and my parents would go on a vacation, Emmy and Joe would take me in for the week and would treat me like family. It was a home full of art, love and a deep-rooted commitment to the Jewish community of Hamilton. Emmy was the quintessential artist in both her craft and in the way she conducted her life. She will be deeply missed by her family and by those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Condolences to Brian, Danny and Alex
I am deeply sorry for your loss. Your mom was such an inspiration- so full of life, warmth and creativity. Still riding a bike into her 90s. fondly remembered. She will be deeply missed by my mom.
I did not know Emmy, but I heard many wonderful things about her from Zach and Angie. She was obviously very important to them. She was admired and she was loved.
I believe I would have very much enjoyed meeting her. We might have shared an afternoon or two listening to Edith Piaf.
My sincerest condolences to her family. I know she will be missed.
Our deepest condolences to the whole family. Very sorry for your loss.

To the Singers
Mrs. Singer was a good friend to Anne and Joe Minden. She’d my mom after my dad died. I was always glad to see her. I thought she was a model or movie star with that captivating beauty.
One of her pieces of art was displayed in the living room. Dancing women. So beautiful
May Emmy’s name be for a blessed memory

My condolences to Brian, Danny and Alex and their families on Emmy’s passing. Emmy and Joe were dearest of friends to my parents. I have many fond memories of Mrs.Singer and her engaging, energetic personality. I spent time in the Singer home as a neighbouring family when I was a youngster too and always admired her artistic talents in sculpture and the wonderful friendship my Mom and Dad had with both she and Joe for so many years. When Emmy called and socialized with my mom it was always a special time for her. Her memory is a blessing to her entire family. A very special friend of my whole family indeed.
Dear Alex, Jodi and Family

May her Beautiful Memory be for every Beautiful Blessing!
