Richard (Dick) Citroen of Stoney Creek Ontario, peacefully passed away at home listening to jazz on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. He was 84 years old.
Dick was born on June 11,1937 to Lily and Charles Citron in Lambeth, Surrey England. Dick was in some ways like Mel Brooks’ 2000-year-old man. He had many occupations and had many stories to tell of those he had known or rubbed shoulders with.
Dick played drums with Tommy Steele, Shirley Bassey and Charlie Watts. He performed at The Cavern and worked with Led Zeppelin, The Foundations, James Last and Vera Lynn as a concert promoter as well as managing popular Burlington band The Brass Union. He also worked for the Beatles as the North American arm of NEMS and Apple Records, and producer of Vince Hill at the Club for CHCH-TV before leaving show business in 1971.
In the years that followed until his retirement Dick used his creative and prolific entrepreneurial skill to open several service and manufacturing enterprises. His most notable “firsts” was to open the first door-to-door airline limousine service in 1972 and the first and only Canadian manufacturer of chuck jaws used in machine shops everywhere.
Dick emigrated to Canada in 1965 along with his first wife Dorothy (aka Terri) and his twins Richard and Gail. In 1981 Dick married Alexandra (Sandra) McGoldrick who he would always say was the love of his life. They had a daughter Sarah. Both Sarah and Sandra were with Dick when he passed.
Dick was predeceased by his sisters Jacqueline, Barbara, and Emma. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Sandra Citroen along with his children Gail (Dave), Richard (Katrin), and Sarah. He is also survived and lovingly remembered by his grandson David (Dawn) and his great-grandson Caleb. “Poppa Dick” will always be in their hearts.
Also mourning his passing are his sisters Linda and Diane and his brothers Robert and Peter all of England and his sister Betty of South Africa. He will also be missed by many nephews and nieces and good friends.
Services will be held at the United Hebrew Memorial Chapel at 28 Ewen Road on Monday, December 13, 2021, at 1:00 p.m.
Dick lived a long and full life. He had a brilliant mind and endless energy.
May his memory always be a blessing.
My Condolences to the Dick Citroen family. I first met and worked for Dick in his production of “Vince Hill at the Club” in the early 70’s as the bassist in the orchestra for this 26 week variety show that was recorded live in front of a studio audience at CHCH-TV in Hamilton. RIP Dick Citroen
