GOLDSTEIN, Mel (Melvyn) 1942-2019 Sadly, on August 5th at the age of 76, Mel passed away due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. He leaves behind his wife Carolyn (Westoll), and his son David (Michael); as well as in England, his brother Barry, sister-in-law, niece, cousins and faithful friends, known as Melvyn there. A private funeral was held on August 7th in Hamilton. Mel arrived in Canada in 1972 after having belonged to the ranks of the iconic London black taxi service for more than 10 years, and settled into the H.S.R. as a driver until 2001 when he retired. He was active; travelling, swimming, and taking long walks with his beloved dog. Mel continued to be sassy, witty, curmudgeonly, and most of all, soft hearted until 2011 when the early signs of Alzheimer’s set in. For excellence, compassion and wisdom, deep gratitude is extended to Sasha Adler of the Hamilton Halton Alzheimer Society and Dr. K. Saperson of St. Joseph’s West Fifth Campus who both first recognized the onset of Alzheimer’s and provided our desperately needed lifeline. Special thanks to Chantal, Kendra and staff of the Alzheimer Society; Khanh, Loretta, Amber, Jen, Rose, Oliver and staff of Shalom Village; the kind, patient staff of Macassa Adult Day Programme; the camaraderie of friends at MacNab Recreation Centre pool when they had little idea what had befallen Mel; for the excellent treatment Mel received at the Seniors’ Behavioural Unit at St. Joe’s West Fifth Campus by Dr. Crowson, Dr. Grantham, Tianna and staff; finally to St. Joe’s E.R. and C.C.U. fourth floor Dr. Chung and nurses. Thank you all for your compassionate care. To the loyal friends and family who supported us along the dark, devastating journey of Alzheimer’s, thank you with love. If so desired, donations to the Hamilton Halton Alzheimer Society would be sincerely appreciated.
