On Sunday, November 27, 2022 at Hamilton’s St. Joseph’s Villa. Allan Edward Levine, brother and brother in-law of Roslyn Levy and Robert Levy, dear uncle to Michelle Levy and Cara Bensimon (Moise) and great uncle to his nieces and nephews Sofia, Nikolas, Asher, Levi and Callie
A personal message on the United Hebrew Memorial Chapel website condolence book at https://uhmc.ca/levine-allan/ would be especially welcomed at this time.
I was wanting to contact Allan for his expertise in military history when I was sorry to see that he had died. I used to live in Ottawa and we became friends when we both wrote for The Ottawa Revue newspaper. The other comments here ring true because I too participated in games of Scrabble and other board games with him and others. I remember he often got more joy out of making an unusual word in Scrabble than making a lot of points. Sorry to see you go Allan. You will be missed.
I am so sorry to hear of Allan’s passing.
Allan was a wonderful player at our group scrabble games, showing up with his spinning board and a generous selection of snacks.
He called himself a “wordsmith” because of his writing but I thought of him as a linguistic genius as I never saw anyone play scrabble as well as he did.
Wishing you heartfelt condolences
Sincerely Joan Brodie

I met Al at the National Archives of Canada.where he also researched historical characters who were Canadian mercenaries, his favorite topic. He was a thorough researcher who often traveled long distances to interview them or people who had known them.
We became pals.
Al Levine to whom I gave the nickname Leviticus created a small world where we all felt a sense of importance ( how he did it I’m not sure ) .As someone regarded as a cog in the wheel at the National Archives, this meant a lot to me.. He would organize board games afternoons and evenings, not only for his friends but also included were my children, Issie and Joel too. He loved to play with words. He was a hyperactive who drew continous mirth at these gathering, promoting it in us too.. To my recollection, he provided food and drink at his own cost alone.
I’m saying Kaddish for him, though he passed away a year ago.
Dear Roz and Bob, Cara, and Michelle, and children, It is with a heavy heart that I learned that Allan has passed away. It seems like only yesterday that Allan and Roz and I were teenagers, just starting highschool together. After highschool our group of friends scattered, but I kept connected to Allan through Roz and Bob. Allan had a highly creative mind and was a determined researcher, talents he used in writing many articles and books, often on Jewish themes …. and in his work at Library and Archives Canada (LAC). Even though I only saw Allan when he visited Toronto, he always would have welcomed me if I visited Ottawa. He always would ask about my family and how everyone was doing. He cared. So even though I am sad to hear of your loss, I know that Allan’s love for all of you will remain in your hearts forever.
Dear Roz and Robert and Family,
Our deepest sympathies on the loss of your brother. We are thinking of you during this challenging time.
With love,
Randi & Peter
