On my way into work this morning I was remembering stories from my childhood. Janice’s comments above brought back so many more. I was one of those young girls who had her ears pierced with an ice cube and darning needle, in the Robbin’s kitchen on Haddon Ave. I remember many meals in that kitchen, including one of Goldie’s specialties “hot dog goulash”. Although we were not related by blood, she was always Auntie Goldie and will be missed by many.

Aunt Goldie was a tour de force…she achieved a lot in her very long life and she lived life within the boundaries of her terms. She did so much for the community in Hamilton and I have so many personal memories of her from childhood and well into adulthood. She made sure that not only did her kids go into the world of tap and piano and so many other avenues of talent searching but she ensured that my parents sent Geri and I for tap dancing lessons and she encouraged me to go the the Hamilton Conservatory for my singing and drama lessons as an adolescent. She introduced me to Rabbi Green and Rabbi Herbie Millen for whom I babysat their kids and my own personal journey into frumkite. She also was not only my aunt but a teacher at Sunday School one year at Beth Jacob. When my son, Yoni was born..she brought over a cradle that my father had given her for her children and she saved it for her grandchildren and then lent it to us for the welcoming of her great nephew…my son. There were all the birthday parties that she made for her kids and the waxed paper covered nickels placed in the cake for us to discover and fortunately nobody to my mind ever swallowed a coin. She pierced my ears with ice cubes, alcohol and a sewing needle and she did the same for many members of the Hamilton community and also in washrooms at barmitzvahs and weddings for total strangers. I myself bore witness to at least one of these events. She lived life fully and was a beloved wife and mother. She also got me partime positions to usher at the ballet and opera and so I was able to fine tune my cultural appreciation and growth as well. She made sure her kids were prepared with batons, tap shoes and various musical instruments to entertain at a moment’s notice…even at a park Borovy Family reunion…I took photos as a 10 year old and have pictures in my photo album of those incidents as well. There was always something to learn from her and jewishly..she and Uncle Harry were so involved in the Chevra Kadisha and her shul, Beth Jacob and honoured at the Negav Dinner and so many other accolades that even I with a great longterm memory can’t even remember.
To her kids and spouses, and grand and great grandchildren and Uncle David…may your memories of Aunt Goldie help to sustain you throughout your grief and who knows what projects she has already started in Gan Eden and Shomayim. May you be comforted with all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and know no more sorrow.
Love,
Janice
