Survived by his wife Judi, brother Harold (Donna), children Aaron (Susana), David (Charmaine), Noah (Yaffa) and Benjamin (Taryn), and grandchildren Gabriella, Aliza, Emmanuel, Ezra, Naftali Dovid, Basya Bracha and Yehudah Tzvi. Born in Toronto, where he was an early protégé of Harry Rosen, Marvin operated Marvin Caplan Gentlemen’s Apparel in downtown Hamilton from 1978 to 1998. Marvin proudly represented Ward 1 on Hamilton City Council from 1994 to 2003, and later worked as a real estate broker. Marvin’s greatest joy and source of pride was his family. In politics, Marvin was driven by what was right more than by what was pragmatic. Marvin’s inclusive nature earned him many loyal friends. Public service was his passion, and he served as a volunteer in numerous capacities, including but not limited to his service as president of the Social Planning and Research Council, as a proud Rotarian, an assistant with the Out of the Cold program and a member of the Refugee Committee at Beth Jacob Synagogue. At the synagogue, Marvin was known as a welcoming presence, always ready with candy, a smile and a kind word. In Talmudic tradition, Marvin constantly debated and questioned convention, always with the goal of developing knowledge and serving social justice. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday (February 2) at Beth Jacob Synagogue, 375 Aberdeen Ave., Hamilton. Interment to follow at Beth Jacob Cemetery. Shiva at 108 Amelia St., Hamilton, 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to The Social Planning & Research Council of Hamilton to address community initiatives of diversity, equity and social issues.

Date of Death: January 31, 2017 Funeral will take place on Thursday February 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Beth Jacob Synagogue, 375 Aberdeen Avenue, Hamilton. Cemetery: Stanley Sobol Beth Jacob Cemetery, 1400 Snake Road, Burlington.
