SHRAGGE, Dr. B. William It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Bill Shragge, age 64, of Hamilton, on April 20, 2012. Cherished husband of Phyllis for 37 years. Beloved father of Marla Eisenberg (Doron), Avi, Andrea, Benjamin and Rebecca. Devoted grandfather of his precious Max. Formerly from Winnipeg, Dr. Shragge completed his training in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, as well as Critical Care Medicine, in 1976 at the University of Manitoba. He obtained his Royal College Fellowship the same year. He undertook a two-year post-graduate fellowship in Birmingham, Alabama and returned to Canada in 1978 where he joined the Department of Surgery, McMaster University, Hamilton. He held the rank of Professor Emeritus within the department. Dr. Shragge was involved with the McMaster University undergraduate medical program immediately upon his arrival and was chair of the program from 1985 to 1990. Dr. Shragge maintained a busy cardiac surgical practice until 2001. He had an on-going interest in administrative leadership and in 1996 assumed the role of founding Chief of Staff of Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation. In 2001, he completed his five-year term at HHSC and assumed the role of the founding Chief of Staff of the Niagara Health System, a position he held for seven years. His vision and leadership led to the establishment of the McMaster University satellite medical school in the Niagara region. He also held the position of Chief of Staff and Vice-President Academic Medical Affairs of St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton, from 2001 to 2004. Dr. Shragge maintained numerous provincial roles in health system leadership. He was a founding member of the Cardiac Care Network from 1988 to 1999. He was appointed to the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee in 2006 and was appointed vice- chair of OHTAC in 2008. He was appointed Chair of OHTAC in 2009. In July 2009, Dr. Shragge assumed the role of CEO of Associated Medical Services. In this role, he led the development of programs designed to further the humanities and patient-centered care in undergraduate health professional education. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 22nd at the Adas Israel Synagogue, 125 Cline Ave. S., Hamilton. Interment will follow at the Beth Jacob Cemetery. Shiva will be held at 377 Hess St. S., Hamilton, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday; 2 to 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with evening service at 8 p.m. Morning services at the Adas Israel Synagogue.
