It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, Dr. Michael Greenspan, on September 23, 2026.
Devoted father and father-in-law of Launi and Glenn, and Brandon and Tara; loving father of Nolen and Rivi; dear brother and brother-in-law of Barbara and Jeff; and best friend to his cherished dogs, Lulu and Malcolm.
Mike’s greatest loves were his family, sports, animals, and caring for others. He was a respected and prominent member of the Hamilton medical community, dedicating the past 40 years of his career to serving as a urologist. He touched countless lives through his compassionate care and traveled throughout Ontario performing organ retrievals to help save others.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to Mike’s colleagues over the years. He deeply valued your respect, friendship, and support. We also wish to thank Dr. Margetts, Dr. Treleaven, and Dr. Yellin for the compassionate care and guidance they provided to our father.
Please join us for services at The United Hebrew Memorial Chapel of Hamilton, 28 Ewen Road, Hamilton, on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Following the service, a graveside burial will take place at Temple Anshe Sholom Cemetery, 427 Limeridge Road East, Hamilton. Family and friends are then invited to attend a brief Shiva at the family residence on Monday evening.
Donations in Mike’s memory may be made to the SPCA or the Kidney Foundation of Canada
Dr. Greenspan was an incredibly caring and compassionate mentor to me during my surgical training at McMaster University. We spent countless days together in the operating room at Hamilton General Hospital, where he taught me many of the foundations of my specialty—knowledge and skills that I continue to use every day in my own practice. Dr. Greenspan had a long and deeply meaningful career. Beyond the many patients whose lives he touched directly, his dedication to training generations of urologists has ensured that his knowledge, skill, and commitment to patient care will continue to benefit thousands of patients for years to come. I will always remember our time together with great warmth and gratitude, and I will miss him greatly.
Allan and I are saddened by the news of Michael’s passing. He was a gifted and respected Specialist, with a compassionate touch and a great sense of humor. I met him in the early 70’s, afterwhich he became a part of our family. We are fortunate to have made some wonderful memories which I am grateful for.

If you’re fortunate you may be lucky to experience a hand full of people who have profound positive impact on your life. Michael was one of those people for me from an early age. He became my brother in law when I was 6 when he married my sister Wendy. Michael was not just present at my milestones, he has front and centre. My emcee at both my bar mitzvah and wedding. Michael introduced me to sports with my first baseball cards and a game in New York (pre blue jays). We travelled together all around the U.S. as far as Hawaii. When vanity license plates became an option, I suggested PP DOC which I thought was fitting for the best urologist in Canada. Michael will be greatly missed. My heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends. May his memory always be a blessing.

A great caring physician, colleague and an example for the rest of us. Our hearts are with his children and family. A great dad, the sorrow stays, the memories help.
I was fortunate enough to be referred to Dr. Greenspan a decade before he retired. The referring doctor saved my bladder, and my life with the referral. Dr. Greenspan acted quickly and effectively so that I may continue treatments and live a normal life. When I last spoke to Dr. Greenspan, we discussed retirement. Both being the same age, it was like a life-long friendship discussion about how we are going to close our working life chapter. He and I retired the same month, and at the same age! I only saw him once outside of the medical world in Dundas, but I felt like I saw someone I knew. Best wishes from us to Dr. Greenspan’s family and close friends. We lost a good one.
For the family & friends there are no words that take away the pain of loss but memories can comfort …from old ward 28 (old General) to ward 5 South (new General) I want you to know there were many shifts/doctor’s orders written/ countless patients shared with Michael He was a caring & knowledgeable doctor & if memory serves me correctly we had a few conversations about thoroughbreds as I love my horses and it was an honour to know him- Donna G. Dr Greenspan was an amazing mentor and urologist. I was so sad to hear of his passing. I will forever cherish our conversations in the OR and the clinic. I still hear his instructions when I operate. Sending lots of love to his loved ones.
