Bertha Mayer (née Moshe) passed away peacefully on June 30 after a long and fulfilling life.
Born on October 26, 1935, in Baghdad, Iraq, to Yehoshua Moshe and Tova Dan Gour, Bertha was a lifelong lover of books, languages (she was a polyglot), and learning. Her curiosity never faded, and she continued her studies by taking night classes in literature, where she met the love of her life, Sasson, in Israel.
Bertha lived many lives. She was a top student in Iraq, an avid reader, and a lover of parties, socializing, and bringing people together. She was also a gifted cook whose Iraqi dishes—including T’bit, Kooba, Mahasha, and Kichri—became staples at family gatherings. Of all the roles she embraced throughout her life, the one she cherished most was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Bertha married Sasson in 1960, and together they shared 51 years of marriage. They built a loving family and raised three children: Igal (m. Val), Sarit (m. Mark), and Mark (m. Charm).
She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Jordan (m. Kim), David, Jonathan, Geoffrey (m. Elana), Rachelle (m. Mike), and Elijiah, as well as her great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Peyton, Lev, and Talia.
Bertha will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, courage, and devotion to her family. May her memory be a blessing.
A funeral service will be held at United Hebrew Memorial Chapel, 28 Ewen Road, on Wednesday, July 1, at 1:00 p.m., followed by burial at the Adas Israel Old York Road Cemetery.
Shiva will be observed at 6 Tally Ho Drive, Dundas, on Wednesday following the burial until 9:00 p.m.
The following Shiva schedule will be Thursday (1-4 PM, 7-9 PM), Friday (1-4 PM), Sunday and Monday (1-4 PM, 7-9 PM).
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bertha’s memory may be made to St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton.
